Animal Adoption Process
The City of Fayetteville Animal Shelter is a wonderful facility in Fayetteville to find a loving dog or cat to adopt and make a member of your family. By adopting a from our shelter, you not only save the life of that animal, you support our services so that we can continue to care for Fayetteville’s abandoned, stray, injured, and sick animals.
If you wish to adopt a pet, we encourage you to come to the City of Fayetteville Animal Shelter find a friend in a homeless animal, and complete an adoption application. Also, check our Petfinder or ShelterNet pages to see the dogs and cats we have available for you to adopt. These websites are updated regularly, so bookmark them and check back frequently.
Our goal is to find permanent, loving homes for companion animals. We evaluate the animals to the best of our ability to assure they will be suitable family pets. Once you bond with an animal and apply for adoption, there is typically a 24-hour application processing period to allow us time to consider the application, check references, and obtain your landlord's approval (if applicable). Our 24-hour wait period also allows our veterinary staff to spay or neuter, microchip, rabies vaccinate, and check for feline leukemia or heartworm in the animal. This waiting period also allows you time to thoroughly consider the responsibilities of pet ownership and the time to purchase the necessary pet supplies that will be needed to properly care for your new pet. We may have some pets available that have already been spayed or neutered; these pets may be able to go home sooner than 24 hours, depending on how long it takes to get your application approved.
Adoption applications may be downloaded online at the City’s website and printed and submitted in person or by mail, but you must have a specific animal in mind before turning it in. You may email your application to Animal Services at email@example.com. Animal Services staff will notify you within 48 hours of your application status after you have submitted your adoption application. You are also welcome to call the shelter at any time to check on the status of your application.
Your adoption fee will cover the following services, valued at over $250:
- Spay or neuter
- Rabies vaccination
- Microchip installation
- Booster shot (DAPP2V for dogs and FVRCP for cats)
- Dogs are tested for heartworms
- Cats are tested for feline leukemia
- Flea and tick treatment
- Free behavior and training advice in our online Adoption Toolkits
The fees are a bargain, and include important services for the health and safety of your new pet. Remember, however, while Shelter health services are excellent, it is a necessity that you provide your pet with regular professional veterinary care.
How about giving an aged dog or cat a home? Not only is an aged dog or cat special, we do not charge an adoption fee for any pet that is over 10 years old. If you provide a loving home to an older dog or cat, there is no charge because we thank you by providing spay or neuter services, microchipping, rabies vaccination, booster shots, de-worming, and flea and tick treatment for free. In addition, we will also test the dogs for heartworms and the cats for feline leukemia for free.
Animals adopted from the Shelter may not be sold, given away, or abandoned. Should you not wish to keep your adopted pet, we prefer it to be returned to the City of Fayetteville Animal Shelter. If you decide to try and rehome the pet yourself, please notify us so we can offer advice and update the pet’s ownership information, if the pet is successfully rehomed.
