Free Cat Friday at the Fayetteville Animal Shelter

06/15/2011

On Friday, June 17th, 2011, the adoption fee for all cats will be waived.

Not only is summertime a time for family and friends, but it’s also a great time of year to spend with an adopted pet. Adopting a pet helps the Fayetteville Animal Shelter, as it is a time of year when homeless animals overwhelm the shelter. So, in honor of "Adopt-a- Shelter-Cat-Month," as well as to empty our cages for the scores of animals that need to come in, the Shelter is using donation funds to waive the adoption fees for all of our fabulous cats and kittens on Friday, June 17.

"It is definitely crunch time at the Shelter right now" says Justine Middleton, Animal Services Superintendent.  "Every day we are faced with the challenge of large amounts of incoming homeless animals and we are trying to make it as easy as we can on potential adopters to open their hearts and their homes to a new pet." While the Shelter does use many foster homes, it simply cannot keep up with the high number of kittens and adult cats that come through its doors each day.

Friday, June 17th will mark the Shelter’s first ever "Free Cat Friday" event.  All of the available cats and kittens will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to go to their new forever home.  The Shelter will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 17th and all the cats will be available on a first come, first serve basis so Shelter staff recommends that adopters get there early.  The Shelter is also encouraging people to fill out their adoption applications in advance so the staff has time to get the application approved before the event.  Applications can be picked up at the Shelter which is located at 1640 S. Armstrong Avenue in Fayetteville or on the City’s website.

Studies have shown that emotional attachment is not related to the price people pay to get a pet." says Middleton "Having a fee waived adoption event is a new strategy we are trying to get Fayetteville’s animals into loving homes.  We would love to have an empty cat adoption room at the end of the day on Friday, so please come visit us."
