Environmental Dynamics Ph. D. Candidate at the University of Arkansas, Sarah Lewis holds a Bachelor of Science (double major: French/Biology Secondary Education) from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She relocated to Arkansas for a Master of Arts in French Literature. A former award-winning science and French teacher, she has focused her life’s work on educating others about protecting natural resources.
Sarah has been an active member of the community. A former Neighborhood Representative and Chair for the Council of Neighborhoods in Fayetteville, AR, she has been a Board Member of Fayetteville Downtown Partners, Education Committee Member for the Illinois River Watershed Partnership, and was chosen 2007 Ozark Headwaters Group (Sierra Club) Activist of the Year. Most recently, she is the Position 2, Ward 4 Alderwoman on the Fayetteville City Council.
Sarah is passionate about identifying and working through challenges at the interface of humans and the environment. Her research focuses on public perceptions of and willingness to pay for watershed ecosystem integrity. Her work with the Center for Agricultural and Rural Sustainability (CARS) is associated with developing sustainability indices for agriculture, as well as working to amend local development codes to enable municipalities to incorporate Best Management Practices for stormwater. She also conducts workshops on sustainability, as well as develops watershed education curriculum through her consulting position with Springline Consulting Group.
