Mayor Jordan Congratulates Owl Creek School Odyssey of the Mind Team
04/28/2009
Mayor Lioneld Jordan extends congratulations and support to the Owl Creek School Odyssey of the Mind team. Mayor Jordan learned about the team of sixth-graders and their upcoming trip to the World Finals at Iowa State University, at the Farmer's Market last Saturday. The team advanced through regional and state competitions to qualify for the World Finals in Ames, Iowa, on May 27-31.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the Regional, State, and World levels. Thousands of teams from the U.S. and over 30 other countries participate in the program. Only 800 teams qualify for the World Finals.
The seven members of Team Supernova, merged their individual creative skills to build a motorized vehicle and script a puppet show during which the vehicle flawlessly travels to four environments.
The team of sixth-graders are seeking donations to help pay for a passenger van and u-haul rental to take the 7 kids, 2 coaches and their puppet theatre to Iowa. There is an immediate need for donations by May 1st and the students will continue to hold fundraisers until the end of May to pay the $6,000 in fees associated with their trip. Donations can be sent to Principal Rhonda Moore, Owl Creek School, 375 N. Rupple Road, Fayetteville, AR 72704.
