Parking Management

The primary duties of the Parking Management Program is implementing parking rules and regulations, increasing public awareness of the ordinances which regulate parking, and responding to the needs of citizens regarding inquiries and complaints concerning parking matters.

The goal of the Parking Management Program is to issue as few parking tickets as are necessary to enforce the City's parking ordinance. The objective is to maintain public parking availability for patrons of downtown businesses by encouraging the use of long-term parking programs by downtown employees. The City of Fayetteville provides long-term metered parking, as well as gated parking for downtown employees. There is also a Hang Tag permit program that provides additional parking options.

In 1998, a number of changes were made to improve operational efficiency and customer service. The most noteworthy improvement was the completion of the replacement of existing mechanical parking meters with electronic meters. This project was phased in over three years. Completion of this project made Fayetteville the first city in the state to be utilizing electronic parking meters. The replacement and addition of parking signage in the downtown served to improve the consistency and appearance of signage. Improvement was also noted in the ability to direct motorists to parking. The hang tag program for downtown employees has grown to a level of 85 tags in use today.
