Enhancing the Quality of Sports Through Parks and Recreation
Once again, Fayetteville Parks and Recreation can be referred to as an Award Winning Department. On two different occasions, Fayetteville Parks and Recreation has been awarded by Best Recreation Program of the Year in the State of Arkansas. Earlier this year, the United States Specialty Sports Association referred to Fayetteville Parks and Recreation as the top Department in the New South Division (the New South Division consists of Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama). However, Fayetteville Parks and Recreation may have just received their most prestigious award to date.
In celebration of their 50 year anniversary, Sports Illustrated set out to honor the top 50 Sports Towns in America, one per state. Mayor Dan Coody, Parks and Recreation Director Connie Edmonston, and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chairperson Wade Colwell accepted the award at a Banquet on Thursday, November 20th.
The award is based on grass roots community recreation programs offered to the citizens of our community. With the collaboration between Parks and Recreation and community organizations such as the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club, Fayetteville Youth Baseball, and Fayetteville Disc Association ... community sports are as healthy in Fayetteville as they have ever been.
Fayetteville Parks and Recreation is featured on Sports Illustrated's Website and is mentioned in the December 1, 2003 Sport Illustrated Magazine. Later in 2004, the award will be proudly displayed on the entrances of Fayetteville in the form of a road sign.
