Youth Slow Pitch Softball

This spring and summer, approximately 500 girls will play in Fayetteville Parks and Recreation's Youth Slow Pitch Softball program. Our program operates under the Good Sports philosophy that emphasizes having fun more than competition. Our league rules differ for each age group to ensure the participants have as much fun as possible, while learning the basic skills of the game.

Even the way Parks and Recreation creates teams has "fun" in mind. Girls currently in grades K - 12th grade are eligible to play. For girls in K - 7th grade, teams are organized by schools; meaning girls get to play with their friends from school. Participants in grades 8 - 12, form their own teams and chose their own coach. All coaches must be 21 years of age or older.

Registration is $45 per player. This includes a full uniform. Scholarships are available through Pagnozzi Charities.

Kindergarten - 1st Grade Program

Kindergarten and 1st graders play tee-ball on Tuesday evenings and some Saturday mornings at Wilson Park Softball field. Every girl gets to bat once an inning and every girl gets to play in the field. This allows the girls to get as much playing time as possible. Games are 55 minutes long.

2nd - 3rd Grade Program

2nd and 3rd graders play on Monday and Thursday evenings and some Saturday mornings. This is a coach pitch league meaning their coach pitches the ball to his/her own team. Each batter is allowed three strikes or five pitches, whichever comes first. Every girl gets to bat once an inning and every girl gets to play in the field. This allows the girls to get as much playing time as possible. Games are 55 minutes long.

4th - 5th Grade Program

4th and 5th graders play on Monday and Thursday evenings at Gary Hampton Softball complex. This is the first year of player pitch where girls pitch to the other team. In this league, we use a modified strike zone mat that increases the strike zone which makes it easier for pitchers to throw strikes makes batters more aggressive at the plate. The mat surrounds the plate and extends back from the plate. If the pitched ball hits the mat or home plate, it is a strike. Each batter begins with a count of 1 ball and 1 strike. This tends to speed up the play of the game and keeps girls more interested on what is going on. When the batting team gets three outs or six runs, they take the field for defense. Games are 7 innings or 55 minutes.

6th - 7th, 8th - 9th & 10th - 12th Grade Program

Our 6th - 7th, 8th - 9th, and 10th - 12th grade leagues play on Monday and Thursday evenings at Gary Hampton Softball Complex. These are all player pitch leagues but do not have the modified strike zone mats. These leagues play just like our 4th and 5th grade league in that the batting team takes the field when they get 3 outs or 6 runs in an inning. Each batter begins with a count of 1 ball and 1 strike. Games are 7 innings or 55 minutes.
