Commission Celebrates Historic Preservation Month at Drake Field
Fayetteville, AR - The Fayetteville Historic District Commission will celebrate National Historic Preservation month at White Hangar on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 5:15 p.m. Mayor Dan Coody will open the event with a proclamation recognizing Preservation month and the recent historic preservation efforts that have resulted in the designation of Drake Field White Hangar as Fayetteville’s first local ordinance district. This Place Matters is the theme of the month-long celebration, which is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Drake Field White Hangar, now home of the Arkansas Air Museum, has architectural and historical significance as one of two dozen wooden air hangars in the nation. The City Council designated the structure as a local ordinance district on February 5, 2008, which means that White Hangar will be protected by local design standards.
The Airport Board, the Air Museum Board and the Historic District Commission will join Mayor Coody for the proclamation reading. A regular meeting of the Historic District Commission will follow the reading. The Air Museum is located at 4290 South School Street.
