Criminal Investigations Unit

The Fayetteville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit consists of a sergeant and nine investigators. Detectives assigned to this unit investigate crimes committed against persons and property such as murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault/battery, burglary, thefts, forgery and financial crimes. Detectives solve crimes via the processes of questioning victims, witnesses and suspects, collecting physical evidence at the scene of a crime and by tracing stolen property or vehicles associated with a crime.

The position of Crime Scene Technician was established in March of 2001, and the crime scene investigator works under the supervision and in conjunction with detectives of the Criminal Investigation Division. The Crime Scene Investigator is primarily responsible for the thorough documentation of crime scenes and the identification, processing and collection of physical evidence.

An investigator from the Criminal Investigations Unit is assigned to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. This Task Force Officer is highly trained and responsible for investigating terrorism by gathering and sharing intelligence, collecting evidence and making arrests.
