LOCAL WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ADOPTION SCAM
Fayetteville Police Chief Greg Tabor announced today the arrest of a local woman for an adoption scam.
On December 7th, 2009, the Fayetteville Police Department received a complaint from the victims reporting they had entered into an agreement with the suspect in January of 2009 to adopt the suspect’s child when born. During the time of the pregnancy the suspect took approximately $13,000 from the victims. When the child was born in May of 2009, the suspect did not give up the child. During the investigation, investigators also determined that the suspect had received $2200.00 from another adoption agency and never contacted them again. The investigation also revealed three other adoption agencies have dealt with the suspect in past years showing the same pattern.
Arrested was Shelly M. RAMIREZ, white female, age 25 of Fayetteville. Ramirez has been charged with Theft by Deception (Felony).
The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected.
