POLICE REMIND MOTORIST OF REDUCED SPEED AND PROHIBITED CELL PHONE USE IN CONSTRUCTION ZONE.
Fayetteville Police Chief Greg Tabor wants to remind motorists of a new construction and reduced speed zone in the area of Garland Avenue and Knapp Street. There is also a new law that restricts the use of handheld cellular phones while driving in school zones and in work zones.
The new law prohibits the use of handheld cellular phone by operators who are driving in a school zone or are passing by school buildings during hours when children are present. The law also prohibits the use of handheld cellular phones while driving in a highway work zone when workers are present. The new restrictions were signed by Governor Beebe on February 18, 2011 and went into effect on October 1, 2011.
The police department will be monitoring the construction zone on Garland Avenue as well as other restricted zones. Drivers are cautioned to be aware while driving through this area and watch for street/highway workers and heavy equipment.
