Compost (decomposed leaves, grass and small brush) is available for purchase throughout the year while supplies last during normal operating hours at teh compost facility. Please call 575-8398 to see if compost is available. The City uses natural composting techniques by monitoring temperature and moisture content. With newer equipment and good rainfall, natural composting can be completed in approximately four to six months. When the composting process is finished, the compost is tested by Woods End Research Laboratories, Inc. to check for mineral and heavy metals composition, and other important features such as moisture content, weight and the presence of commercial yard chemicals. Upon testing certification, Woods End determines the best usage of the compost material and gives it a Rodale Organic Gardening Quality Seal of Approval. During the last three years the compost has acheived the classification of a garden compost. The material is usually screened before selling to the public to remove large items.
Mulch (ground up trees and limbs) is available throughout the year and is very benefical as a weed blocker and aids with moisture retention. Mulch is commonly used in landscaping projects.
