Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. The City of Fayetteville, in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful, has recently begun a cigarette litter prevention program in the Dickson Street area. This program is designed not only to prevent cigarette litter but also to identify where and why cigarette litter takes place. With the help of a $1,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful, Fayetteville installed new ash receptacles on Dickson Street to accompany the existing 33 pole mount receptacles currently in place. The grant also provides for distribution of ash trays to downtown businesses, and conducting education and outreach activities to raise awareness about cigarette litter. This education campaign will bolster Fayetteville’s existing efforts, which include twice-weekly cigarette litter cleanups as well as maintaining several dozen ash receptacles in the downtown area.
Free Mulch Give-Away. Due to an excess supply of mulch, Fayetteville residents may receive free mulch during the month of December during normal operating hours at the City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. in southeast Fayetteville. The mulch will be given away for free until supplies are exhausted and may be acquired in truck-bed/trailer amounts or residents can bring their own containers or bags for loading. The facility hours are 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the site will also be open on Saturday, December 7th from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The mulch is made from ground-up trees and is great for moisture retention around plants. The mulch is made from trees collected through the City’s Yard waste Program and trees dropped off at the Composting site.
Mulch Distribution. Mulch will be made available during normal operating hours (see above) while supplies last. The fee for mulch is normally $10 per scoop (2 and a half cubic yards) but is free while supplies last during the month of December. Mulch is available to anyone.
Compost Facility Hours. The City’s Compost Facility at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The site will also be open December 7th. November through March, the site is open the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 a.m. to noon; and from April through October, the site is open the first two Saturdays of each month from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Residents of Fayetteville are allowed to drop off brush, leaves or grass during these hours but need to bring a recent water bill showing solid waste charges and proof of residency to drop off yard waste for free. Commercial landscapers and contractors are allowed to use the site for drop off purposes and normal fees apply.
Compost Distribution. Screened compost is currently available. Only Fayetteville residents are allowed to purchase the compost and must show proof of residency through their water bill. No commercial customers or apartments are allowed to receive compost. Please bring a copy of a recent water bill showing solid waste charges for proof of residency. Residents will only be allowed to purchase one scoop for $20 plus tax when the compost is available. One scoop is approximately 2 and a half cubic yards or enough to fill the bed of a regular size pick-up truck. Limiting to one scoop allows a chance for most residents to purchase the compost should they desire. Compost is also available in bags for those residents that do not have access to a truck or trailer. The bags are $4 plus tax and weigh approximately 50 lbs. If 10 or more bags are desired please call ahead so the bags can be prepared in advance. Please call 479-575-8398 for confirming 10 or more bags.
Transfer Station Hours. The City’s Transfer Station for the disposal of solid waste is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., excluding holidays. The Transfer Station will be closed on Thursday, November 28th for the Thanksgiving Day holiday. The Transfer Station will have modified hours of 7 am to noon on Friday, November 29 in lieu of City offices being closed for the Thanksgiving Day holiday. The Transfer Station will have modified hours of 7 am to 12 pm on Tuesday, December 24th in lieu of the Christmas Day holiday and will be closed to the public on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25th.
The fees for disposal will increase in December with the new rate being $43.85 per ton, $28.00 minimum, or $6 per bag plus tax.
Recycling Drop-Off Information. The Solid Waste and Recycling Division operates two Recycling Drop-Off Centers. The first is located just off 15th Street at 1420 S. Happy Hollow Road. This site is open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to provide convenient recycling options. The second site is the newly opened Marion Orton Recycling Drop-Off Center located at 735 W. North Street. The hours of operation for this site are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 6 am to 5 pm. On Thursdays, the site is opened from 6 am to 7 pm. The site is closed on Sundays and also on City holidays. The site will be closed for the Thanksgiving Day holiday on November 28th and 29th and will be closed for the Christmas Holiday on Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, December 25th.
Postponing Plastic #3 through #7 collection Due to a lack of recycling markets, the City will no longer be accepting plastic bottles and containers marked #3 through #7 at recycling drop-off facilities or in residential collections. The market that was being used previously for recycling of these plastics has closed. When two or more domestic markets that can account for the recycling of these plastics can be utilized, the program will be reinstated. Please do not place #3 through #7 plastics into the other recycling containers at the recycling drop-off.
