Solid Waste and Recycling information for the month of February

The City of Fayetteville Solid Waste and Recycling February Schedule and Information Update is now available.  The February Schedule covers the Presidents’ Day holiday hours, compost facility information and hours of operation, availability of screened compost, Transfer Station hours of operation, Postponing the #3 through #7 plastic collections, and recycling drop-off information.

Presidents Day Holiday  The Solid Waste and Recycling office and Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, February 18th, for the Presidents’ Day holiday.  Commercial and Residential trash, recycling and yardwaste collection will not be affected by the Presidents’ Day holiday and will run their normal schedules.   

Compost Facility Hours.   The City’s Compost Facility at 1708 S. Armstrong Avenue is open during normal operating hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.   The site will be open on Saturday, February 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  Winter hours have begun, and the site will only be open the first Saturday of each month through March. 

Residents of Fayetteville are allowed to drop off brush, leaves or grass during these hours but need to bring a recent water bill showing solid waste charges and proof of residency to drop off yard waste for free.  Commercial landscapers and contractors are allowed to use the site for drop off purposes and normal fees apply.

Compost Distribution.   Screened compost is available at this time until supplies last.  Only Fayetteville residents are allowed to purchase the compost and must show proof of residency through their water bill.  No commercial customers or apartments are allowed to receive compost.  Please bring a copy of a recent water bill showing solid waste charges for proof of residency.  Residents will only be allowed to purchase one scoop for $20 plus tax when the compost is available. One scoop is approximately 2 and a half cubic yards or enough to fill the bed of a regular size pick-up truck.  Limiting to one scoop allows a chance for most residents to purchase the compost should they desire.

Transfer Station Hours.    The City’s Transfer Station for the disposal of solid waste is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., excluding holidays.  The Transfer Station will be closed to the public on Monday, February 18th for the Presidents’ Day holiday. 

Notice- There will be new fees for disposal beginning December 1st, 2012, due to a rate increase from the landfill.  The new fees will be $42.55 per ton, $27.10 minimum, or $6 per bag. 

Postponing Plastic #3 through #7 collection     Due to a lack of recycling markets, the City will no longer be accepting plastic bottles and containers marked #3 through #7 at the Recycling drop off facility.  The market that was being used previously for recycling of these plastics has closed.  When two or more domestic markets that can account for the recycling of these plastics can be utilized, the program will be reinstated.  Please do not place #3 through #7 plastics into the other recycling containers at the recycling drop off.  

Recycling Drop Off on S. Happy Hollow.   The Solid Waste and Recycling Division operates a recycling drop-off center located just off 15th Street on S. Happy Hollow Road.  The site is open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to provide convenient recycling options.  Volunteer groups are being sought to work a few hours on Saturdays to clean the site and provide education to those wishing to recycle.  Please contact Brian Pugh at 718-7685 or for more information.
