The City of Fayetteville conducts 9 Bulky Waste Clean Ups around the City each year with 5 in the Spring and 4 in the Fall. Each Ward in the City hosts two clean ups a year and the Solid Waste and Recycling Division hosts a clean up at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility around Earth Day each year to honor that day. These bulky waste clean ups are specifically for large bulky items that cannot fit into a residents normal trash cart. These clean ups will not accept bags of normal household garbage as that is handled through normal weekly curbside collection. There are certain things that will not be accepted at the clean ups which are outlined with this information. If you are a resident of Fayetteville you can bring bulky items to any of the clean ups. Please have identification to verify residency.
The City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong will be closed to the public for an unknown amount of time. All storm debris needs to be processed at the three sites found in the ice storm update on the home page. These sites are the designated FEMA sites.
Due to the recent ice storm, the City of Fayetteville Solid Waste and Recycling Division has suspended all residential trash and recycling routes for the week ending January 31st, 2009 as Solid Waste workers are helping to clear streets from down trees. Routes will be resumed on Monday, February 2nd or when road conditions improve. Residents are encouraged to leave the trash carts and recycling bins at the curb until crews can safely service them. All trash, including extra bags that are placed at the curb will be picked up with no extra bag charges. Commercial routes for trash service have resumed.
The City of Fayetteville’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division wants to remind residents that Christmas trees are very recyclable with the City composting program. Christmas trees will be collected until January 15th, 2009 when placed curbside with yardwaste collection which occurs the same day as the normal trash and recycling collection. Please allow ample space around the trash cart and recycling bin for ease of collection.
The holiday season is upon us and with it comes the excess trash from most households as they deal with parties, presents and other holiday activities. Since Fayetteville operates a Pay-As-You-Throw residential trash program, managing this extra volume can prove somewhat of a challenge. Reminder- 2008 extra bag stickers can be used through January 15th, 2009 for extra trash at holiday times. Please use one sticker per 32 gallon trash bag.
Each fall Fayetteville experiences a large volume of leaf waste which can cause some problems for homeowners. The City receives numerous calls to use the street sweeper to remove the leaves. The City of Fayetteville does not remove leaves curbside with the use of the City’s street sweeper as this equipment was not designed to collect and remove leaves for yardwaste disposal.
The Lake Fayetteville Watershed Partnership will hold their annual Fall Lake Fayetteville Clean Up on Saturday, October 11th, starting at 9:00 am. This year the Watershed Partnership is again working with the City of Fayetteville by hosting this clean up as part of the Great Arkansas Clean Up sponsored in part by Keep Arkansas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful.
The City of Fayetteville’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division would like to announce the distribution of free mulch to the public. Due to the excess supply of mulch, which resulted from Tropical Storm Ike, the City will allow the public to receive the mulch, at no charge, during normal operating hours at the City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. in southeast Fayetteville. The mulch will be given away until supplies are exhausted. Facility hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am to 3 pm and the first Saturday of each month from 8 am until noon.
Fayetteville will be competing with other cities of the same size for up to $10,000 in awards, which would be used to support recycling efforts through local education and awareness programs. If every household in Fayetteville recycled just two more cans per week there would be close to 2 million more aluminum cans recycled in Fayetteville each year! The 2007 average price paid to the City of Fayetteville for aluminum cans is $1,727 per ton!
Dates for the City's Ward 1, Ward 2, Ward 3 and Ward 4 Bulky waste clean-ups are now set. Please see the following for dates and locations. All clean ups begin at 7 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.
