Yard Waste Program

Fayetteville offers a weekly curbside Yard Waste service to single family residents as an environmentally conscious means for disposing of yard waste.  The City collects yard waste in the form of grass, leaves and brush.

Currently a state law bans yard waste from disposal in Arkansas landfills.  The City encourages all citizens to participate in some form of yard waste reuse, whether it is this program, back yard composting, or the use of a mulching lawn mower.  Information on back yard composting can be obtained by calling our Waste Reduction Coordinator at 718-7685 or through e-mail by clicking here.

Properly prepared yardwaste, household garbage and recyclable materials will all be collected from single family residences on the same day.  The yard waste collected through our program will be recycled at the City’s Composting Facility.  Brush will be ground to produce mulch (wood chips) and grass and leaves will be combined to produce a high quality compost.

Mulch is available while supplies last and is available to anyone wishing to purchase some.  Compost is available while supplies last and is sold to Fayetteville single family residences only.  Commercial, apartments and multi-family units cannot purchase compost.   A copy of the most recent water bill showing solid waste charges is required if purchasing compost.

Compost can be purchased during the normal operating hours of the compost facility when available.  The normal operating hours are Tuesday's and Thursday's from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  During the months of April to October, the site is open on the first two Saturday's of each month from 8:00 am to noon.  During the months of November to March, the site is open the first Saturday of each month from 8:00 am to noon.  The site is located at 1708 S. Armstrong in southeast Fayetteville.

All types of plastic bags are excluded in the yardwaste program whether traditional black bags or biodegradable plastic bags.   Plastic contaminates the finished product and causes operational issues with equipment.  Residents may place their yardwaste into large 30 gallon brown paper bags which are available for purchase at local stores or they may place their yardwaste in unlined trash cans clearly marked "yardwaste" and placed out next to their trash on collection day.

Removing plastic from the yardwaste stream improves the quality of our compost and mulch products.  Any resident that does not want to take advantage of this program may bring yard waste to the City’s Composting Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Avenue just south of the Animal Shelter during normal operating hours.

If you have any questions about your yard waste collections, please contact the Solid Waste Division at (479) 575-8398 or e-mail here.
